ABOUT CERVERA

Cervera is the capital of the region of La Segarra. The municipality is located in the southern sector of the region and its landscape is representative of the counties of Pla de Lleida, an agricultural area where cereal cultivation abounds.

University of Cervera

The University of Cervera, built between 1718 and 1740, after the War of the Spanish Succession, is an imposing building with a rectangular floor plan and prismatic towers, currently home to various public institutions: a secondary school, the Josep Finestres Regional Library, the UNED, etc.

The building was designed and directed by the architect Francesc Soriano and Miguel Marín. The main Baroque façade and the neoclassical interior façade with an Ionic pediment and an allegory of wisdom stand out.

Santa Maria's Church

Gothic church with important Romanesque elements located in the old town. The stained glass windows were designed by Colí de Maraia as well as the rose window on the north door. In the stained glass windows you can see images of the life of Jesus, from the Annunciation to the Virgin to the appearance of the Lord in St. Thomas.

Agriculture building (Sindicat)

Work of the modernist architect Cèsar Martinell and built in 1920. In contrast to the Campanar and University towers, it gave it the peculiar shape of work towers combining modernist forms and new materials.

The building was in operation until the 1970s, when it was permanently closed. In 2002 the Paeria de Cervera bought it and in 2003 it was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest. Since then, new exits are being sought to bring the facilities back to life. There is currently a company dedicated to the search for professional talent and also a kitchen where activities are carried out.

Alley of witches

The most mysterious and esoteric meeting point in Cervera is Carreró de les Bruixes (formerly Carrer de Sant Bernat). According to legend, witches used to go there on full moon nights to share their spells. An ideal place to let your imagination run wild. And that's where the witch party, the Aquelarre, was born.

Recent historical research leaves little doubt as to the existence, in Cervera, of two Jewish neighborhoods in the medieval period. One, called Call Sovereign, located on what is now Call Street. And the old one, the call jussà, located outside the walls of the closed town from the 12th-13th centuries, very close or even inside the well-known alley of the Witches.

Sant Pere el Gros Church

Sant Pere el Gros is a Romanesque church located in the municipality of Cervera, in La Segarra. The building responds to the formulations of Lombard architecture of the eleventh century and is one of the best examples of medieval Catalan architecture that adopt the type of nave with a circular floor plan. It is notable for being the westernmost Romanesque church of all built in this period. The church of San Pedro the Fat one is in the outskirts of Cervera, to the southwest, in a slight elevation of the land to the confluence of the Salat torrent with the river of Ondara. It is a monument declared a cultural asset of national interest.
